A Worsening Crisis
The HIV/AIDS epidemic today is at least 50 percent worse than experts predicted just a decade ago.

It has claimed about 25 million lives—roughly the same number of deaths caused by the Bubonic Plague of 14th-century Europe. But considering that 42 million people still live with HIV/AIDS and that almost 14,000 people are infected every day, HIV/AIDS is by far the more devastating human catastrophe.

At a rate of 8,000 deaths a day, HIV/AIDS claims as many casualties as the Vietnam War every seven weeks and as many as World War I every three years.

The Hardest Hit
Sub-Saharan Africa is the epicenter of this worldwide epidemic.

According to the United Nations, “Sub-Saharan Africa has just over 10% of the world’s population, but is home to more than 60% of all people living with HIV—some 25.4 million. In 2004, an estimated 3.1 million people in the region became newly infected, while 2.3 million died of AIDS.”

The most visible affect on children of the HIV crisis is the rising number of orphans. In 2003, there were 43 million orphans in the region.

"HIV/AIDS is having a devastating impact on families, communities, societies, and economies," says former South African President Nelson Mandela. "We need bold initiatives to prevent new infections among young people

Rhetoric to Action
GlobalTribe is adopting HIV/AIDS as our new campaign in order to generate awareness for this pandemic and encourage youth to work for positive change.

We have begun to work with partner organization, AFXB, to identify projects that GlobalTribe youth can adopt and raise money for.

In the meantime, we encourage everyone to offer suggestions, plan your own global action, and begin dialogue on this important issue by visiting our Message Board.
