Nature's Wrath
Never in our lifetime have we seen a natural disaster impact so many lives in so many countries so quickly.

According to the latest official figures, more than 154,000 people in 12 countries were killed by the deadly wave set in motion when a 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck on December 26, 2004. The map above illustrates the tsunami's reach and why the global response has been so swift.

Within two weeks of the disaster, individuals and governments worldwide committed almost seven billion US dollars to aid the surviving victims, many of whom lived in extreme poverty to begin with. The fundraising continues in many countries and the relief work by all of the world's largest aid agencies are well underway.

Looking Ahead
The heartwrenching images and news footage we see on TV make it clear that the devastation is immense and reconstruction efforts will take years to complete.

That is especially true in countries that are hardest hit - including Indonesia (map), Thailand (map), India (map) and Sri Lanka (map), where entire communities were wiped out. The loss is incomprehensible to most of us.

Although people around the world have responded generously so far, most of their donations are directed toward emergency relief not long-term reconstruction.

And we know from past experience that many needy communities and people are bound to fall through the cracks.

Now that the global community has responded, we need to make sure that we follow through.

Making a Difference
GlobalTribe is adopting Tsunami Relief as a campaign in order to raise money for long-term reconstruction projects.

What are they? That's for you, GlobalTribe members, to decide. We will offer suggestions (see box on right) and we invite you to nominate organizations and projects to us by posting suggestions on the message board.

In May, we will ask each chapter to nominate one organization and GlobalTribe members as a group will get to vote on the final recipient(s).
